Sewerage Upgrade Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality have made some inprovements to the sewerage sytem in the area resulting at fewer spils over the last few months.We are hopeful that more funds will be made available to solve the problem once and for all.According to Council engineers, short term plans include the upgrading of the pumps. Upgrade Project update Wildlife in Crisis has offered us four Barn owls for our Sanctuary and will provide owl boxes that will be mounted in some of the high trees.Residents will be encouraged tuse the correct type of Rat Poisening to prevent the newly intruduced Barn owls from getting poisened by eating poisened rats.The introduction of these predators can reduce the need for placing rat poisen in the area. Despite a determined effort by your committee to keep the area tidy, some visitors show no respect for nature by dumping their rubbish inside and outside the fence. New "Please do not litter" boards were placed around the sanctuary. Fortunately many residents are helping by removing litter on a regular basis Littering a major problem Duck weed (Family Lemnaceae)In summer Korsman pan is covered with a bright green growth, often mistaken for excessive algae growth. In winter the growth turns brown-red.By absorbing nutrients, Duckweed also has potential as a natural water purifier, converting waste water and sewage into pure water and edible Duckweed with little resulting sludge. Barn Owl Project Latest on dying Spurwings Last year we saw many Spurwing Geese dying in Korsman.We have closely monitored the situation this year and again noticed some dead and weak Spurwings in the Sanctuary. A feeding scheme was implimented during the last week and we hope that we can prevent a recurance.One dying Spurwing Goose was taken to Wildlife in Crisis and they were able to save it by force feeding it. This bird has increased its weight by nealy 50% during the last few weeks. EWT Commendation The Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) recognised Korsman Conservancy for the progress made in the short time since they have been established and for the commitment to restoring and protecting this important wetland. New Viewing Berms Basil Read, the Civil Engineering Construction company responsible for the N12 upgrade project, has constructed two Berms outside the western fence to allow visitors and photographers unobstructed views of the sanctuary and birdlife. Vandalism .Another act of Vandalism was experienced during the first week of July.One of the newly erected Benches donated by Friends of Korsman, was destroyed. This follows the incident last year when one of the Bird Hides was burnt to the ground .
