George Oertel became the Chair Person of the Korsman Close Residents Association(KCRA) in 2006.It was realised at a very early stage that the upkeep of the area and the Sanctuary needs to be improved. KCRA under the leadership of George Oertel approached the Ekurhuleni parks department to present their vision of the area. This presentation took place on 23rd November 2006 where it was decided that a form of Public-Private-Partnership should be investigated. Ekurhuleni was prepared to spend capital in the area, but the residents need to take some ownership to protect the investment by Ekurhuleni. Subsequent presentations were made at KCRA meetings where most of the residents supported the vision.During 2009, Ekurhuleni appointed Red Landscape Architects (RLA) to draw up a high level master plan to restore and improve the Sanctuary and surrounding area. The key elements of this plan are:- Incorporating the Aubrey Ritz Park into the existing Sanctuary- Replacing the delapidated fence with a new meandering fence- Providing a meandering walkway around the sanctuary and through Aubrey Ritz Park- Removing about 80% of the invasive reeds- Replacing the invasive Kukuyu with veld grass.- Providing viewing points and bird hides for visitors- Providing a natural amphi-theatre for education and community activities- Implementing traffic calming/reduction methods to enhance the natural feel of the area.
